Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has updated its privacy control settings, giving users more control over information, profile picture, and last seen status.

Previously, users had the option to hide the aforementioned settings for contacts only or no one. With this new privacy update, WhatsApp users have more control by allowing them to hide profile pictures, online status and last seen time with certain users with the new “My Contacts Except” option. This allows contacts to see your profile picture, last seen, or status, except for people you’ve excluded.

How to use the new privacy features

WhatsApp’s new privacy features aren’t as extensive as Telegram, which already supports hiding recent profile photos on a per-contact basis. But it seems like a handy feature for people who tend to hide their personal information from banking and business accounts on WhatsApp. Here’s how you can use WhatsApp’s new privacy features.

Open WhatsApp and go to app settings. Now click “Account” and then “Privacy” and click on the desired personal information that you want to hide. You will see the option “My contacts except”, in this menu you can select contacts with whom you do not want to share personal information such as online status, profile picture or last seen time.

With all these new security features, WhatsApp is trying to give users more control over their personal data. But the survey showed that about 53% of Indian users reported seeing promotional messages on their WhatsApp.
