Meta has released updated 3D avatars for Facebook, Messenger and Instagram in India. These avatars are “more expressive, customizable and diverse” and were created to “better reflect the billions of unique people on this planet.” The social media platform has added new face shapes and assistive device options for people with disabilities to help them better customize their avatars.
New 3D avatars are appearing in Facebook, Messenger, as well as for the first time in Instagram Stories and DM, and can be used in apps via stickers, feed posts, Facebook profile pictures and more.
New avatar updates include cochlear implants and full-size hearing aids (for one or both ears in different colors, on all platforms, including virtual reality), wheelchairs (appears in stickers). The platform said that we will be adding more options over time based on community feedback.
In addition, subtle adjustments have been made to face shapes and skin colors to make avatars look more authentic, and additional features will be added to the avatar editor throughout 2022.
“Representations in the metaverse should reflect the diversity of the real world. Avatars are just the first step in making sure everyone can express themselves in a unique way. When you create your avatar, you can choose the right facial features, body types, clothing styles, and more to create your virtual self. When we launched our revamped avatars last year, we offered over one quintillion different combinations, and we keep adding more options to give people even more ways to express themselves,” said Manish Chopra, Director and Head of India Partnerships at Meta.
To make it easier to use avatars in apps, users can create an avatar in any app and then sync it through the Account Center to use it across all apps.
How to Create These Facebook, Messenger and Instagram Avatars
On Facebook, you can create an avatar from News Feed (on Android or iOS) by tapping “Comment” followed by an emoji symbol to “Create your avatar.” For Messenger, you need to click on your profile photo in chats and then click on “Avatar”, this will take you to the Facebook app to continue the process. On Instagram, you need to go to your profile, click “Edit Profile” and then “Create Avatar”.
